This week’s RouteHero* is Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth!
The national organization, Meals on Wheels America, empowers its local member programs to strengthen their communities, one senior at a time. The Lewes Delaware chapter is one of the 5000+ nationwide chapters that deliver “nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that enable America’s seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity.”
Meals on Wheels America delivers “so much more than just a meal”. This amazing organization has millions of volunteers who work tirelessly all across America to combat social isolation, address safety hazards and provide holistic care to over 2.4 million seniors every year!
The Lewes-Rehoboth chapter (MOWLR) was founded in 1970 and started working to provide meals upon being funded by Delaware Division of Aging in 1973. In their first year, the program delivered 16,609 meals to homebound seniors in the Sussex County community. In their first ten years, more than 200,000 meals were distributed, which works out to about 55 meals per day! As their client needs grew, the program expanded to include a holistic approach to providing services and crucial social interaction.
This Meals on Wheels chapter has a cleverly named annual fundraiser event called “Wheel for Meals”! Their May 4th event has three routes: 12, 25 & 50 miles that tour scenic Sussex County and over the years has drawn hundreds of enthusiastic riders of all abilities. All those proceeds directly benefit MOWLR and their needful seniors in the community.
